YO...
First things first, WELCOME AND THANK YOU for reading my first post. If you don't know me, let me introduce myself. My name is Hugh Long. I am 23 years old and live in Los Angeles, California by way of North Carolina. After graduating from Pepperdine University in May 2015, I began working in the Entertainment industry, where I started at the literal bottom (in the mailroom… in the basement...) That experience, to say the least, was humbling and made me think long and hard about what I actually wanted to do with my life. After months of debating, I decided to leave my job and begin working in a field that I am truly passionate about: architecture and design.
Six months later and here I am, writing this inaugural post for my website, longstoryshort.io. The name of my website comes from a mix of two things. First, my effort to cleverly include my last name and second, my description of my preferred writing style: short and (not so) sweet. Forget the florally, overthought, and often vapid, writing of most “bloggers;” I aim to please in a concise and poignant manner (with the addition of a few off color jokes and sarcastic commentary.)
Over the next few months, I will be posting a variety of architecture and design related articles addressing my sentiments about the field. My educational background in History has led me to explore some awesome architectural heritage sites in California (and elsewhere), so please don't be surprised if I write about a few of those places ever so often. Los Angeles is a goldmine for aesthetically pleasing places, but I plan to highlight spots that aren't usually written about by the usual L.A. “blogger.” Forgoing the glossy and readily instagrammable, for the random and sometimes questionable, is more my style. Therefore, if you want more of the usual, this site might not be for you. Design and architecture might seem like a superfluous topic to many. But I think that buildings, homes, and designed spaces have more of an impact on us as people than we realize. OR I could be completely wrong and design is just another way to distract ourselves from the responsibilities of life. EITHER WAY, I hope you aren't just a one night stand reader and that a beautiful relationship blooms between my writing and your brain.
Hope you come back for more.
-Hugh
