Throwback Trends: Patterned Wallpaper

Throwback Trends: Patterned Wallpaper

If you ask any of my friends they will tell you that I post throwback photos way too often. Throwback Thursday became a personal ritual that allows me to relive memories of when I was a way cooler person. I want to extend this habit to my writing by highlighting the best trends of yesteryear with my series: Throwback Trends.

This week for #tbtrends I wanted to focus on an old school decorative element that is currently being recycled: patterned wallpaper. Wallpaper has had many moments over the centuries, but my favorite period is from the 1970s. Loud, unapologetic wallpaper was produced in droves during the Disco era and slowly turned residential interiors into inverted wrapped present boxes. The look introduced repetitive motifs and strong colors to a part of design that traditionally featured pastel hued scenes from pastoral life. Wallpaper transformed during the 70s and is now having its twilight moment.

Wallpaper in 2017 uses refreshed versions of the 70s motifs with an added contemporary edge. My personal favorite trend has been the capsule collections created by clothing designers specifically focussing on wallpaper. Matthew Williamson's collection for Osbourne & Little brings an imaginative spirit to the wallpaper game that echoes the 70s without ripping off past designs. Voutsa's entire line of wallpaper has infused clothing design patterns with traditional artistic motifs to produce wallpapers that are quirky yet refined. This trend is strong and unapologetic much like its 1970s iteration and aims to make design adventourous again.
